Hull City have gained their first win of the season after beating Reading 2-1 at the KCOM Stadium yesterday. Here are five things we learned from the game-
Jarrod Bowen up and running- Eyebrows have been raised by City keeping hold of him over the summer and he was back at the KCOM yesterday with a goal and then an assist for Jackson Irvine’s header.
Grant McCann’s open and expansive football- It is no doubt exciting to watch at time and the Tigers burst into a two goal lead against the Royals. In terms of entertainment it is great and the work ethic and constant press of the midfield is something that looks to have been worked on over pre-season.
Exposed at the back- The big question about the new style is it does leave you vulnerable at the back. You feel Hull will need at least three goals to feel 100% comfortable in games this season. Lucas Joao’s goal in the second-half for Reading made it very tense for the hosts.
Tom Eaves impressive- He was snapped up over the summer from Gillingham and appears the forward Hull have missing over the past couple of seasons. He is big, strong and holds it up well to then bring the likes of Bowen, Kamil Grosicki and Irvine into the game.
New style suits Kevin Stewart- The ex-Liverpool midfielder has done well under McCann so far and seems to fit in well into the new system. It could be a big season ahead for him.
