Baggott Handed First Senior Indonesia Call For Training Camp
Monday, 26th Apr 2021 23:46

Blues youngster Elkan Baggott has received his first call into the full Indonesia squad ahead of a training camp at the start of next month.

A 34-man party has been named for the camp in Jakarta which starts on May 1st and runs to May 10th and is in preparation for three World Cup qualifying Group G matches in the United Arab Emirates in June.

The Indonesians face Thailand on June 3rd, Vietnam on June 7th and the UAE themselves on June 11th.

Prior to those games they will play friendlies against Afghanistan on May 25th and Oman on May 29th.

Indonesia are currently bottom of the five-team Group G table and not able to progress to the next round.

The 18-year-old, a former pupil at St Benedict's Catholic College in Colchester, was born in Thailand to an English father and Indonesian mother.

The 6ft 4in tall centre-half won his first U19s caps during a camp in Croatia in October and was forced to miss another U19s get together in Spain in December due to Covid travel restrictions.

Baggott made his senior Blues debut in the Papa John’s Trophy tie against Gillingham earlier this season and was an unused sub for the League One games against Sunderland and Crewe in January.

He signed his first professional contract with Town in January, a deal which runs to 2023 with the club having an option to keep him for a further season.

The academy product joined King’s Lynn Town on loan in March and has made six National League appearances for the Norfolk club.

Given that Indonesia doesn't allow dual citizenship I really don't see how he is playing for them - or alternatively, how he is eligible to play in the UK. I suspect he's (illegally) holding both, which could potentially cause Indonesia to have to forfeit matches he's played in if an opponent complains. They, and he, better be careful here.

A six foot four centre half....Isn't that something we are missing at the moment.....Need to blood these youngsters sooner rather than later to get them up to speed for the future of this club....He could be a regular imo....COYB...ITID

If he's as good as the hype suggests then please keep him well away from the first team squad for now! I dont know anything about the lad so I'm not judging him, but don't most big talents have a good few first team appearances under their belts at the age of 18+? Particularly when they have the physical stature, which it appears he has?

bobble, I second the Bir Bintang but I'll take a nasi padang over your nasi goreng.
Mind those dragons!

I'd love to see him in or around our senior team but given what Cook said last week about youngsters it doesn't look likely yet does it . Mind you as in life , there's always the exception 👍

Baggott needs to be wary here. If he starts spending much of the season jetting around the world to Indonesia and back for friendly games & training camps, it will surely damage his club career, which is potentially his bread & butter.

He hasn't had a mention in the match reports in the edp, but they did announce he had signed. The wonderful Culverhouse has them nearly bottom of the league.

Tractorboy in hk. What has his citizenship got to do with him playing in the uk? Think you'll find theres many foreign players playing in the uk. All they need is a work Visa. But in his case bcse his mother is english he wouldnt need one. Hes not playing for england is he? So that's the only issue there would have been over citizenship. If hed played for england at any level.

Good prospect this lad but not outstanding which is why he is on loan at Kings Lynn. Im not one of the chuck in the youngsters brigade even though they are not ready. Remember what happened to Dozzell and Nydam who both got seriously injured when they were quite obviously not physically ready for senior football. It's very disappointing that we cannot produce youngsters at this low level who can come in and make an instant impact. Gone are the days of the Bobby Robson era when we produced international players.

@arc I watched the extended highlights of a Kings Lynn game and their commentators were singing his praises saying how calm he was in defence and also a good talker on the pitch, not bad for an 18 year old ?

I can't for the life of me understand why we are playing an average Arsenal youngster when we clearly have a talent of our own. Lets hope we get him in the side for next season

McGuinness is further forward in his development and ready for loan spells at league clubs. I know he's not playing well for us but who is at our shambles of a club. Baggott is probably a year behind McGuinness in that respect.

Agreed NITFC, McG clearly wasn't ready this season. Loanees blocking our own player-development is one of the reasons the successful ITFC we used to know has died. Grow our own!
