Wrexham can win promotion as soon as this weekend as they look to end their 19-year absence from League One.

Victory this Saturday would round off the perfect sequel to Wrexham and co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynold's National League Hollywood fairy tale, that saw them return to the Football League for the first time in 15 years last term.

This week marked a year to the day since that top of the table clash with promotion rivals Notts County, with ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster claiming club legend status with his penalty save.

In truth, you really would have to have been living under a rock to have missed Wrexham lifting the National League trophy.

Their League Two campaign, on the other hand, hasn't quite followed the same script.

An opening day 5-3 loss at home to MK Dons was a sign of things to come for the Welsh side, with a season of topsy-turvy form keeping fans guessing as to whether they would be able to go up once again.

Even the most optimistic of Wrexham fans and those who had a soft spot for them thanks to the hit docuseries ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ were wondering if double promotions would be a bridge too far.

But this season’s plot may yet have another happy ending - and this weekend could seal the deal.

Phil Parkinson’s side currently sit second in the fourth tier, four points off league leaders Stockport County who have a game in hand.

A 4-1 win over fellow promotion chasers Crawley on Tuesday night helped push their mission to return to the third tier in the right direction.

Luckily for Wrexham, unlike last season, there are THREE automatic promotion spots in League Two up for grabs, rather than one as it is in the National League.

The teams who then end up in fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh then compete for the fourth promotion slot via the play-offs.

Should Wrexham seal all three points against basement club Forest Green on Saturday, they will be in pole position.

They would then need fourth-place MK Dons and sixth-place Barrow to drop points against third-place Mansfield and Gillingham respectively.

Failing that, they have two more games to get the job done.

It may well be a tall order for everything to go their way this weekend, but even the team recognise just how close achieving back-to-back promotions is.

"It's difficult to ban people talking about it or not mention it," joked Parkinson’s number two, Steve Parkin, after the Crawley win. "But in the dressing room, they know how hard it was last year, they know what it takes to get promoted."

If all the results do go Wrexham’s way, though, a much-anticipated (P) for promotion will be placed next to their name in the table.

Not only will it be the club’s first season in League One since 2004/05, but it will also see the Welsh outfit make club history.

Going up this season will mark the first time Wrexham have won promotion two seasons in a row in their 159-year history, summing up the incredible transformation the club has undergone since McElhenney and Reynolds started their venture together.

Only 10 clubs have achieved that feat since teams could seal automatic promotion from the fifth tier, with now-League Two Tranmere Rovers being the last team to do so in 2018 and 2019.

It goes without saying that League One is not quite as glamorous as the Premier League, which is where McElhenney and Reynolds are presumably aiming for eventually.

But playing clubs the size of ex-top flight outfits Reading, Charlton and potentially Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday will be music to Wrexham supporters’ ears who witnessed the EFL hiatus.

As well as raking in more revenue, McElhenney and Reynolds will be able to tick off bigger football grounds with bigger followings and ultimately make the club even more successful off the pitch.

It’s not clear whether the duo will be present at another packed out STōK Cae Ras this weekend.

However, there’s no doubt they’ll have their eyes glued on the game wherever they may be given what could happen come the final whistle.

Reynolds was seen watching the resounding victory over Crawley on Tuesday on a huge green screen whilst recording his latest film.

In footage shared on his social media, Reynolds - in full costume - was seen celebrating Wrexham's win.

“Watching the Wrexham game at work: New level unlocked,” he captioned the footage. “Big win today. VERY big.”

Impressively, Tuesday's starting line-up boasted seven players from the National League title-winning squad, representing the long-term strategy instilled at the club when McElhenney and Reynolds arrived.

It's unlikely Wrexham will lift the league title this time round, with Stockport hot favourites to do so. The leaders will seal promotion if they avoid defeat to Morecambe at home on Saturday.

Of course, Wrexham going up is still not guaranteed, either.

But regardless of how this season ends, Wrexham's roller coaster ride in pursuit of promotion could lead to possibly the best edition of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ yet.
